I have visited numerous national parks in my lifetime; however, one week-long visit and trek will forever be remembered: My University of Colorado Geology class field trip in the summer of 1993. On the way to the Grand Canyon, our class stopped and camped one night at Petrified Forest National Park. I was in awe at the views there as we learned the history. On the way to the Grand Canyon, we stopped to visit and walk around the entire Meteor Crater Natural Landmark. Yes, we took photos in 1993; however, I do not have any to share at the moment. The best part of our class field trip (which encompassed the entire course) was when we arrived and camped at the top of the Grand Canyon near the North Rim and then hiked for 5-6 days all the way down to the bottom of the Kaibab National Forest and then up the other side of the canyon. It was an amazing, beautiful, breath-taking, historical view of the many layers that encompass the canyon, rivers, gorges, caves and waterfalls. That trip was the trip of my lifetime. I’ll always remember how healthy I felt on the last day. I will always love hiking and the natural beauty of our world!
Sincerely,
Grand Canyon National Park
America’s Southwest is full of breathtaking canyons, but none as famous or as widely visited as the Grand Canyon. This world-famous landmark offers wondrous views, spectacular hiking, exhilarating whitewater rafting and countless adventures. One look across the enormous chasm confirms just why this inspirational place is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a must-see destination for so many travelers. The park also protects a wealth of biological diversity, including numerous endemic and threatened species and several rare ecosystems.
