Greetings from Grand Canyon National Park

I was fortunate to be able to backpack the Grand Canyon several times a winter for 10 years. I got to see lots of beautiful “off the main drag” trails, but my fondest memories are of Ranger Betsy. Betsy was usually stationed at Havasupai Gardens, but this particular week she was at Bright Angel. I had brought my 2 daughters, their partners and friends and my 6 month old grandson.
Upon arrival at BA campground, I was changing clothes in my tent when I heard a familiar voice. I was delighted to introduce my family to my “favorite ranger” Betsy. She was delighted? that we’d brought a 6 month old to camp “in the canyon, in winter???” After permit check and hitting the “high points” of proper etiquette in the campground she asked about the “diaper situation”. We had a party of 11 and assured her that we had it covered. We also joked about leaving the wet ones open to evaporate while we were in camp. Betsy asked which locker we were using for diapers and offered to carry out the first 24 hours of diapers out, since she was hiking out.
Wow!!! Totally amazed the first timers… first of all I KNOW the RANGER??!! and she was carrying out diapers??!!
Just above and beyond…What can I say? When we got to Havasupai Gardens (2 days later) the Ranger was taking a while to make his rounds any my crew were tired. Just the mention of Betsy and a quick check of the permit sent him on his way and us to bed. What an awesome corridor trip!! Thank you Betsy!!

Sincerely,
Ellen
