As an avid park lover, I felt I must pay homage to the “Father of the National Parks,” John Muir. I visited what was once his home and property in Martinez, CA, consisting of 9 acres of beautiful, green hills and fruit trees. It was in this house where he petitioned Congress for the National Parks bill, which helped preserve some of our country’s most beautiful landscapes for our enjoyment and appreciation. His writings have instilled a deep connection to our natural world in many people, including me. Not only did he understand the importance of preserving these lands for our pleasure, above all, he believed nature was the greatest teacher. If it wasn’t for John Muir, the national parks system as we know it may not have existed. He taught Americans to look at our forests and lakes differently rather than as just a resource. As I walked around the property, I imagined Muir walking along the same path pondering his next trek into the mountains. Every time I visit a park I always think of Muir’s writings. He was definitely correct when he said, “Going to the mountains is going home.” #SFSU
Sincerely,
