What to expect when visiting Stonewall National Monument in New York

When will the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center Open and What Will I Experience There?

The visitor center is open as of June 28, 2024. Admission is free for all people, and visitors can make reservations ahead of time to manage crowding and improve the experience.

The visitor center will house exhibits, provide amenities for park rangers, and help more visitors and locals connect with the historical significance of the site. Serving as an educational resource, the visitor center will offer an immersive experience with a variety of engaging programs, including in-person and virtual tours, informative lecture series, captivating exhibitions, a dedicated theater space, and inspiring visual arts displays featuring a rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ history and culture.

Who manages the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center?

The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center will be managed by nonprofit Pride Live in partnership with the National Park Service. The visitor center encompasses 2,100 square feet at 51 Christopher Street, between Waverly Place and 7th Avenue South in New York City, adjacent to Stonewall National Monument.

What was NPCA’s role in creating the new visitor center?

NPCA played a lead role in organizing community support and lobbying for the national monument’s creation in 2016. NPCA continues to support the site and has worked for years with our partners to open this visitor center to house exhibits, provide amenities for park rangers, and help more visitors and locals connect with the historical significance of the Stonewall story.

Will there be park rangers there?

Yes, the visitor center will serve as home base for the dedicated Stonewall National Monument NPS park rangers, who are committed to welcoming all visitors to the site.

How was the visitor center funded?

Unlike many visitor centers that receive federal funding, this visitor center is supported through generous foundation funding, corporate partners, celebrity endorsements and many supportive partner groups.
