
Cheryl Schreier retired as Superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial after nearly 40 years of service with the National Park Service (NPS) in May 2019. Prior to her tenure at Mount Rushmore, she also served as superintendent of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, and completed a detail as acting superintendent at Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Cheryl has worked at 10 different national park units throughout her career, including Bryce Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Death Valley National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Independence National Historical Park and the Rocky Mountain Regional Office.
Cheryl has been a member of the Executive Council of the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks (Coalition) since 2021 and is currently the Vice President for the organization. Cheryl has worked on a variety of issues, including writing Op-Eds, commenting on fireworks displays at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, park Air Tour Management Plans and Commercial Services planning. She has participated in meetings with Congressional delegations advocating for the NPS mission and NPS employees, administration transition documents and other important Coalition work.
Cheryl served for two terms on the Executive Committee for the Black Hills Chapter of the Sierra Club in South Dakota. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point (UWSP) and was honored as the 2019 Distinguished Alumna of the College of Natural Resources UWSP. She currently resides in Custer, South Dakota and enjoys a variety of recreational activities and traveling with friends and family.
