I visited the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with my church group in 2023. I was in complete shock since I had been planning on visiting one of the parks but was confused about the long process. Yet here I was, hiking in the busiest national parks in the nation!
My most vivid memory was of the Laurel Falls trail, hiking through the large trees. Our group was hiking on a winding portion of the trail when everyone stopped and began to hush down. Confused, I looked ahead past everyone to the bend of the trail and saw a Mother Black Bear with her small cub walking on the trail! I was absolutely flabbergasted and awed at seeing them since I heard that a black bear is the scariest bear to deal with ( even though I would never try to fight it, I’m not a dumb tourist ). I found my phone and took a photo of them both as they hung out, then they both walked right back into their home.
As we climbed the trail further and came upon another bend, it led to a breathtaking view of the Smoky Mountains, and it felt as though my whole being was full and satisfied. It was as though I was just a guest in a wonderful home where all I could do was respect and be grateful for the opportunity.
Ever since that day, over 2 years ago, I will never forget that feeling or the view. It made me realize that being in these National Parks was my calling, and I want to be able to protect that view and others like it for generations of Americans.
Sincerely,
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
