In 1982, when I was 17, my parents drove me halfway up Michigan to my aunt and uncle’s cottage. After spendingt the night with them, I got on a bus to the UP to visit my cousin Deb and her husband Jim and their two small boys. They planned all kinds of adventures for us and one of them was a trip to Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior.
I think this trip is where the National Park bug bit me; I have seen dozens of parks since then and look forward to many more.
Sincerely,
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Nestled along Lake Superior’s southern shoreline on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this remote park is a geologic wonder of colorful sandstone cliffs topped with stately pines, and miles of quiet, unspoiled beaches strewn with agate, jasper, and quartz. Stroll along the coast, hike quiet trails to the park’s historic lighthouse, and take a boat tour to marvel at the mineral-rich rock faces that tower 200 feet above the surface of the lake.
