My Boy Scout Troop just did volunteer service work at Ft. Stanwix National Monument in Rome, NY. We cleaned the old straw bedding out of the Soldiers’ Barracks. We learned that each wooden platform would hold 12 - 14 soldiers, and the straw provided their bedding, We filled seventy-two 42 gallon trash bags with old straw, so the Park personnel can now do repair work on the wooden platform before spreading fresh straw. While we were there, we learned about the history of Ft. Stanwix, and a bit about life in the Fort in the 1700’s, including some of the games that the occupants would play, and some of the punishments applied for infractions! The Park personnel were very friendly and helpful. In spite of the hot, very dusty work that we were doing, I think the boys (and adults) had a memorable time! We look forward to doing more volunteer work at more National PArks later this year.
Sincerely,
Fort Stanwix National Monument

“I have visited many National Parks in my lifetime. They are treasures! My husband and I visited Glacier and Big Bend on our honeymoon in 1983 - favorites of that trip. Since then, we have visited Acadia many times.”
