Learn about African American Heritage at New River Gorge National Park & Preserve

In partnership with YWCA Charleston Racial Equity and Inclusion Program and National Parks Conservation Association, this one-day bus tour will feature short, guided hikes, and a deeper look at sites on the African American Heritage Auto Tour in and surrounding New River Gorge National Park & Preserve.

Originally developed by the park and its partners, the tour uncovers and tells the stories of the many black coal miners, railroad workers, and other community members that helped shape this region. Typically a self-guided tour, YWCA and NPCA have curated and tailored the route to highlight sites for a one-day excursion from Charleston, WV to the New River Gorge area and back.

Transportation, lunch, and snacks will be provided at no cost to participants.
