Saguaro National Park's special qualities are threatened by proposed Interstate 11. If built in Avra Valley, this freeway would be only a short distance from the park's visitor center!
Today, Avra Valley is a biologically rich area with significant, protected open space and wildlife linkages. It is located between Saguaro National Park and Tucson Mountain Park on the east and Ironwood Forest National Monument and the Tohono O'odham Nation on the west. The valley also contains the Santa Cruz River, lands managed by the Bureau of Reclamation and open space owned by Pima County. A new interstate through all of these protected lands would be devastating and irreversible.
Most of the residents in this rural area do not support this freeway segment, part of a larger plan to create a new freeway from Mexico to Canada. New interstates bring with them new development, new roads and more traffic. None of these things are needed in this area; and all of them endanger the natural resources and visitor experience at Saguaro National Park.
Can we count on you to attend one of these public meetings to speak up for the park and voice your opposition to any interstate alternative through Avra Valley?
