- NWRO Regional Council Member
A Snoqualmie Tribal member living in Seattle, Washington, Jaime works on a variety of issues for her tribe including the protection of cultural resources and land reclamation. She also manages the Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands Movement which brings public awareness to the importance of Snoqualmie’s ancestral lands to the Snoqualmie people, their deep connection to the plant and animal kin within the lands, and how individuals can help as they live, work and recreate on Snoqualmie ancestral lands. Many plants and animals once present within Snoqualmie’s ancestral lands are either no longer present or are endangered because of colonization and the extraction-based actions brought to the region including logging and mining.
Many of these same extraction-based industries are causing air pollution issues in Washington State that also affect protected public lands like Mt. Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic National Parks. These air quality impacts are felt by members of Jaime’s family and community, as the rate of asthma increases in Indian Country and beyond. Air quality degradation is also felt by the many plants and animal species living on Snoqualmie Tribe’s ancestral lands, and it’s critical that there is collective effort taken to do what is possible to ensure better air conditions for future generations. To respond to communities’ concerns, EPA must approve a Regional Haze State Implementation Plan for Washington that weighs residents’ right to clean air for their health and safety, as well as their love for and enjoyment of the environment.
