Statement by National Parks Conservation Association President and CEO Theresa Pierno

“As the ultimate national park champion throughout his Congressional career, Raúl Grijalva’s passing leaves a Grand Canyon-sized hole in our hearts. During his more than 20 years in Congress, Representative Grijalva championed landmark bills including the Land and Water Conservation Fund and worked tirelessly to protect the Grand Canyon watershed. In recognition of his enormous contributions, he received many awards and praise from NPCA, Arizonans, and park lovers nationwide. His leadership defended America’s national parks and the people who benefit from keeping them safe. He advocated for the rights of Indigenous communities and worked to elevate the role of Tribal Nations in the management of public lands. From Tucson to D.C., NPCA was proud to work alongside Representative Grijalva and his dedicated staff, and we will continue to uphold his conservation legacy.”
