Statement by Theresa Pierno, President and CEO, National Parks Conservation Association.
“In his new position as acting director of the National Park Service, Dan Smith will serve in a century-old position, steeped in tradition and heavy with responsibility. He will be charged with protecting 417 of America’s most important places.
“While it’s his duty to oversee these important places, it’s our duty to ensure that parks, and all who visit them, come first. As the threats of development, pollution, climate and underfunding all jeopardize our parks, Acting Director Smith must stay true to the mission of the park service just as all those did before him: to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations.”
