Imagine that you, your children, or future generations will be enjoying Gateway in the 21st Century. What are your hopes and expectationsI hope to visit a park that is beautifully preserved while maintaining areas of recreation for the public to enjoy and designating other areas for opportunities for research and education regarding natural preservation and climate issues.
That it will be around for a long time
There should be a Naval and USAF air museum at the Floyd Bennett Field site. This historical perspective of the past uses and glories of the Field should not be overlooked. There were flying boats, anti-submaring patrol plane squadrons, USMarine fighter, and heavy lift (USAF) cargo planes flying out of this base until the late 1960's.
A place where humans can learn to protect and support coastal environment and wild life.
That the park is avaiable for all to USE! Use is the key word here. While areas do need to be set aside for wildlife the park service and others are just getting a little too carried away with the eco BS.
That the park will be easily accesible and will be able to accomodate large numbers of people in an eco-friendly way.
That they don't see cement. Or only the decaying runways.
That there is handicap recreation facilities necessary for boundless access
That Fort Handcock has been well maintained and continued on the path of restoration. That the history of the Hook gets more emphasis than it has in the past and present. That people finally realize that the beach is a “fluid” solid and it's not a permanent fixture.
That there will still be an edge to the city, where one can experience a sense of the wilderness that is the sea
that me, my children, and future generations will be enjoying Gateway in the 21st Century...
Can NPCA adapt to rapid climate change, and perhaps even to the possibility that JB will be completely submerged? Can it see itself coming to the table of federal agencies and brokering deals to redefine its boundaries? If NPCA can project itself WAY into the future of NYC, and institutionalize transdisciplinary models of interaction with local and regional constituencies, it just may survive the rising sea levels and fighting politicians.
I hope that my children will understand the history of the park as well as enjoy and protect the surroundings.
I'd like my children to have a waterfront experience -- to be able to FEEL what New York harbor is like -- and to understand its special ecology. I'd like it to be easy to get to from the center of the city. I would hope that all parts of the park would be linked by water so one could go easily from Sandy Hook to the Jamaica Bay.
Original flocks of migratory avian, aquatic mammalian species will return to the area en route on their various journeys, thus re establishing colonies throughout the world to balance the planet ecologically as a whole. As a scientist, and native of NJ, I wish more than anything to see the spectacular wildlife I enjoyed and learned to love and study as a child so all generations can learn from the same experience(s). As an educator I feel it is important to incorporate human history of the Gateway area with biological history of the same region.

What role do you think Gateway as an urban National Park should play in the lives of regional residents and visitors from around the world?A little bit of green in a massive city....
To preserve the eco-system it supports. To value the natural resources and not give into capitalistic endeavors and allow corporations to leave their stamp on nature. To allow residents access to the park in order to learn about their surroundings as a gift that needs protection and not as a right to be abused.
It should add to the lives of the local residents and hopefully attract visitors from around the world.
A place to engage in recreational activities and fitness and as a way to highlight the beauty of the nearby water and surrounding communities.
Highlight the importance of maintaining nature in an urban setting. A world-class example recognized as such; easy to visit from Manhattan for all visitors. A showpiece of the urban/natural border.
a natural green oasis for city residents and visitors to escape to during the spring and summer to enjoy the out doors. A peaceful and tranquil spot to relax and enjoy nature. Lastly, a place that will captivate the imagination of park goers who will be impressed with what New York City can achieve with growing green spaces in what is otherwise known as an urban jungle/concrete jungle.
Service as the icon for America's National Parks
It should give the visitors a sense that the USA has some environmental sensitivity
For regional residents, it should afford a place from which to escape the stresses of urban life, and for visitors, it should be a showcase of what man can do in an urban setting.
Be an example of conservation in an ever increasing urbanized world.
Gateway should provide and urban oasis, devoid of concrete and filled with greenery. It should enhance the cultural lives of residents, as well as inform visitors of the area's rich history.
Parks are for everybody!

List some of the particular projects and programs you think should be built or implemented by the National Park Service or others at Gateway in the next 10 years.Restoring the historic wetlands at Floyd Bennett Field; integrating a light rail on Flatbush Avenue; introducing solar ferries to New York harbor.
Wireless Internet
more access and sustainability.
Birding programs for youth, global warming and ecology education for visitors...
Ferry service between the parts, ecology restoration and experimentation, relationships between land, air (sky and moon, stars, etc), and water.
Most important is to clean the water and land and protect and create more undisturbed land and water.
Waste management systems that create energy; Gas free watercraft used to explore the park; windpowered vehicles to move around the park; cooking classes using local ingredients in the summertime;
camping.
Improve the understanding that one is in “Gateway National Park” throughout the various parts of the park through signage and a consistent language of means of human interaction (i.e. piers, markers, etc...) that help to unify the disparate areas of the park.
-music festivals where families could go to relax and picnic -opportunities to camp out overnight and hike around for low income new york city residents -outward bound kind of challenge activites for children -an easy transportation system. if no one can get there, the park will be exclusive an unpopular.
More money spent on on the ground projects. Less in over head.
Kayak, hiking and bicycle opportunities wherever possible
The vision of linking all of the parks at Gateway, either via roadway as driving tours or linking via bus, monorail, train, etc., should be foremost, for the parks are really part of the whole. Through their environmental, historical, and cultural differences, each park reveals an important aspect of America as a nation. |
